    1

💡 Check local news for official storm reports

    2

    Take Photos from Ground

Photograph any visible damage to shingles, gutters, siding, or vents.

💡 Don't climb on your roof. Leave that to us

    3

    Check Inside Your Home

Look for water stains on ceilings, walls, or in the attic.

💡 Note any new leaks or moisture

    4

💡 We attend adjuster meetings with you

You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone

    Common Signs

Signs Your Roof May Have Storm Damage

Storm damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Here are common signs to look for. But remember, a professional inspection is the only way to know for sure.

    Dented or Bruised Shingles

Hail creates soft spots and circular dents. Run your hand across shingles - if they feel spongy, you may have damage.

    Granule Loss

Check your gutters for black granules. Heavy granule loss means your shingles may be losing protection.

    Missing or Cracked Shingles

High winds can tear shingles off or crack them. Even one missing shingle can lead to water damage.

    Lifted or Curling Edges

Wind damage often lifts shingle edges, breaking the seal. Water can seep underneath.

    Water Stains Inside

Dark spots or streaks on ceilings, walls, or attic wood may indicate water getting through.

Not Sure? Let Us Check for Free

8 Costly Claim Mistakes to Avoid

We've seen homeowners lose thousands by making these common errors. Learn from others' mistakes. And protect your claim.

    Waiting too long to file

Evidence deteriorates, and insurance companies question delayed claims. Some policies have strict time limits.

Schedule a free inspection within 2 weeks of any major storm.

    Filing without documentation

"I think I have damage" isn't enough. Without photos and professional assessment, claims get denied.

Get a professional inspection with detailed photo documentation before filing.

Not being present for the adjuster visit

Adjusters may miss damage or underestimate costs. Without someone advocating for you, you could lose thousands.

Have your contractor meet with the adjuster to ensure nothing is overlooked.

Accepting the first offer without review

Initial estimates often miss items or undervalue repairs. Many homeowners leave money on the table.

Have a roofing professional review the scope before accepting any settlement.

Making temporary repairs that hide damage

Well-meaning repairs can cover evidence the adjuster needs to see, reducing your payout.

Only do emergency tarping if needed. Document everything before any repairs.

Hiring the first contractor who knocks

Storm chasers often do subpar work and disappear. No warranty protection, no recourse.

Choose a local, established contractor with verifiable reviews and proper licensing.

    Not filing for recoverable depreciation

Many homeowners don't realize they're owed additional money after repairs are complete.

After your roof is installed, file for the withheld depreciation amount.

Signing contracts with large upfront payments

Legitimate contractors don't require big deposits. This is a red flag for scams.

Work with contractors who collect payment after the job is complete.

    The Bottom Line

The insurance claims process favors those who are prepared and properly represented. Working with an experienced contractor who knows the process can mean the difference between a denied claim and a fully covered roof replacement.

    Protect Yourself

    Local Contractor vs. Storm Chaser

After a major storm, out-of-state "storm chasers" flood Northeast Ohio. Here's how to tell the difference, and why it matters for your home and your insurance claim.

    Local
    Chaser

    Physical office in Northeast Ohio
    Accountable after the job
    10-Year workmanship warranty

Warning Signs of a Storm Chaser

    • Knocks on your door unsolicited immediately after a storm
    • Offers to waive your deductible (this is insurance fraud)
    • Can't provide a local address or physical office
    • Pressures you to sign a contract on the spot
    • Has no Ohio contractor license number
    • Can't provide local references
    • Requires large cash payment upfront
    • Doesn't have a permanent phone number. Just a cell

    Why Cornerstone Is Different

    Insurance Claims FAQ

    Your Questions, Answered

Insurance claims can be confusing. Here's everything you need to know about the process, terminology, and what to expect.

    Insurance Terms Explained

    Deductible

The amount you pay out-of-pocket before your insurance covers the rest. For example, if your roof replacement costs $15,000 and you have a $1,000 deductible, insurance pays $14,000 and you pay $1,000.

    Actual Cash Value (ACV)

Your roof's replacement cost minus depreciation. If you have an ACV policy, you'll receive less for an older roof. This initial payment is often just the start. More is released after repairs.

    Replacement Cost Value (RCV)

The full cost to replace your roof with similar materials, without deducting for age or wear. RCV policies generally provide better coverage for homeowners.

    Depreciation

The reduction in your roof's value due to age and wear. Insurance companies calculate this based on your roof's age and expected lifespan. This amount is often recoverable after repairs.

    Recoverable Depreciation

The depreciation amount that insurance withholds initially but pays after you complete repairs. We help you file for this additional payment once your roof is installed.

    Supplement

An additional claim filed when the original estimate missed damage or when hidden damage is discovered during repairs. We regularly file supplements to ensure you get full coverage.

    Adjuster

The insurance company representative who inspects your property and determines the claim payout. We meet with your adjuster to ensure all damage is properly documented.

    Scope of Loss

The detailed list of all damaged items and repairs needed. A thorough scope of loss is critical. We document everything to maximize your claim.

Who in the world does that? Cornerstone does.

Showed up at 6:15 am, done by 2:15 PM. Same day. Not one nail left behind. As I walked around I noticed they had even painted the vent stacks to match. A++ in my book!
