Workmanship Warranty: The One That Matters Most
The workmanship warranty covers the quality of the installation. Improper nailing, bad flashing details, incorrect underlayment application, inadequate ventilation, misaligned starter strips. Anything that goes wrong because of how the roof was installed, not what it was made of.

What Voids Your Warranty
These five actions are the most common reasons manufacturer warranties get denied. Every one of them is avoidable. If you know about them before they happen.
Poor Ventilation
Owens Corning, GAF, and CertainTeed all require adequate attic ventilation as a condition of their warranties. The standard requirement is 1 square foot of net free ventilation area for every 150 square feet of attic floor space (or 1:300 with a vapor barrier). Insufficient ventilation traps heat and moisture in the attic, which bakes shingles from below and causes premature curling, cracking, and granule loss. When a manufacturer inspects a warranty claim and finds inadequate ventilation, they deny it. Even if the shingles are clearly defective.
Unauthorized Modifications
Drilling holes in your roof for a satellite dish, adding a skylight, or attaching solar panel mounts without following the manufacturer's guidelines can void your warranty. Power Washing Shingles
It looks great for about a week, and then your roof starts failing. Power washing strips the protective granule layer off asphalt shingles. Every major manufacturer explicitly lists power washing as a warranty-voiding action. If you have algae stains, use a manufacturer-approved low-pressure chemical treatment instead.
Walking on the Roof Frequently
Every time someone walks on an asphalt shingle roof, they risk breaking seal strips (the adhesive that bonds each shingle to the one below), cracking shingles in cold weather, and grinding granules loose underfoot. Mixing Manufacturer Products
