What to Expect During a Roof Replacement

A roof replacement is loud, messy, and over faster than you think. Here's exactly what happens. Hour by hour, so nothing catches you off guard.

    The Short Version

    Typical timeline
    1 day (most homes)
    Crew size
    4–6 people
    Start time
    7:00–7:30 AM
    Finish time
    4:00–6:00 PM
    Noise level
    Loud (nail guns + tearoff)
    Can you stay home?
    Yes (but bring earplugs)

    Day Before: Prep & Communication

    • You'll get a call or text confirming the start time (usually 7:00–7:30 AM)
    • Move cars out of the driveway and at least 15 feet from the house
    • Take down any wall decorations that might vibrate loose (the hammering is real)
    • Move patio furniture, grills, and potted plants away from the house
    • Let your neighbors know. They'll appreciate the heads-up
    • Make sure your attic access is clear (the crew may need to check ventilation)

    Morning: Setup & Tearoff

    • Crew arrives, stages materials, and lays protective tarps around the foundation
    • A dump trailer or dumpster gets positioned in the driveway
    • Old shingles get stripped down to the decking. This is the loudest part
    • Decking is inspected for rot or damage (any bad plywood gets replaced)
    • Ice & water shield is installed in valleys, at eaves, and around penetrations
    • Synthetic underlayment goes down across the entire roof deck

    Midday: Installation

    • New drip edge is installed along eaves and rakes
    • Starter strip shingles go on first at the eave line
    • Shingles are installed from bottom to top in overlapping courses
    • Valleys, hips, and ridges get special attention. These are the most vulnerable areas
    • Pipe boots, flashing, and vent covers are sealed and installed
    • Ridge cap shingles finish the peak. This is also where ridge vents go

    Afternoon: Cleanup & Walkthrough

    • All debris is loaded into the dump trailer. Your yard should be cleaner than they found it
    • A magnetic nail sweep covers the entire yard, driveway, and street
    • Gutters are cleaned of shingle granules and debris
    • Final photos are taken from every angle (drone + ground level)
    • You get a walkthrough of the completed roof from the ground
    • Warranty paperwork and maintenance tips are provided

    What About the Insurance Process?

If your roof replacement is going through insurance (hail, wind, or storm damage), the process starts well before build day. For a complete walkthrough, see our Ohio roof replacement cost guide and our guide to roofing shingles. Here's how the insurance process typically works:

    1

Free inspection. We document all damage with photos and measurements

    2

You file a claim with your insurance company (we help with this)

    3

The adjuster comes out. We meet them on-site to make sure nothing is missed

    4

Insurance approves the claim and sends you a check

    5

We schedule the build. You pay only your deductible

    6

After completion, we help you collect any remaining depreciation holdback

After the Job: What to Check

A good contractor does a walkthrough with you, but here are the things you should verify on your own in the days after:

    • Walk your yard looking for stray nails (use a magnet if you have one)
    • Check your gutters. They should be clean of debris and granules
    • Look at the ridge line from the street. It should be straight and uniform
    • Check your attic for daylight (there shouldn't be any)
    • Run water in all bathrooms to check for flashing leaks around pipes
    • Verify you received your warranty documents (manufacturer + workmanship)
    • Review your CompanyCam or photo documentation gallery

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most residential roof replacements in Northeast Ohio are completed in 1 day. Larger homes, complex roof designs, or multi-layer tearoffs may take 2 days. Weather delays can extend the timeline, but a professional crew will tarp any open areas overnight if needed.

Can I stay home during a roof replacement?

Yes. You can stay home during the work. It will be loud (nail guns, material drops, tearoff), and there will be debris and crew activity around your home. Many homeowners choose to leave for the day or work from another room. Your contractor should tell you if there's any reason you'd need to leave (like electrical work near the panel).

Do I need to move my car during a roof replacement?

Yes. Move your cars out of the driveway and away from the house. Falling debris, nails, and shingle granules can damage vehicles. Park on the street at least 15-20 feet from the house. Your contractor should remind you about this the day before.

What happens if it rains during my roof replacement?

Professional contractors monitor weather closely and won't start if rain is likely. If unexpected rain hits mid-job, the crew will tarp exposed areas immediately. The underlayment (synthetic felt or ice & water shield) also provides a temporary waterproof barrier. Rain on bare decking is not ideal but manageable if addressed quickly.

Will a roof replacement damage my landscaping?

Some landscaping impact is inevitable. Falling debris, foot traffic around the foundation, and material staging. A good contractor will lay tarps around the perimeter to catch debris, protect gardens and flower beds, and do a thorough magnetic nail sweep of your entire yard after the job is complete.

Who in the world does that? Cornerstone does.

Showed up at 6:15 am, done by 2:15 PM. Same day. Not one nail left behind. As I walked around I noticed they had even painted the vent stacks to match. A++ in my book!

All we did was make a claim. Cornerstone handled everything.

We had wind damage and all we had to do was call our insurance. Every phone call, every email, down to the silliest questions. Knowledgeable and professional from start to finish.

After that the rest of his team stepped it up and made the scheduling and completion of work happen so smoothly — they had the job completed with a bow on top by the time I even thought to call for an update! There's no doubt about it, I'll be calling Cornerstone Roofing and Siding for any future needs."
