3-tab, architectural, luxury, metal. What actually performs in Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles, hail storms, and high winds? Here's the honest comparison with real costs and recommendations.

    The Quick Answer

For most Ohio homeowners, architectural shingles are the sweet spot. 25-30 year lifespan, strong hail and wind ratings, and $3.50-$7/sq ft installed. For a brand-by-brand comparison, see our GAF vs. Owens Corning vs. IKO comparison. They cost about $1,500-$3,000 more than 3-tab for a typical home but last a decade longer. For full pricing details, see our Ohio roof replacement cost guide. If budget allows, Class 4 impact-resistant architectural shingles are the best upgrade you can make in a hail-prone state.

    3-Tab Shingles

The entry-level option. Single-layer, flat, and uniform. Still found on budget builds and rental properties, but increasingly replaced by architectural in new construction.

    Lifespan
    15-20 years
    Cost (installed)
    $2.50-$5/sq ft installed
    Wind resistance
    60-110 mph
    Hail rating
    Class 1-3 (poor to moderate)
    Ohio grade
    C

Cracks in freeze-thaw, loses granules fast, poor wind performance in Ohio storms. We only recommend 3-tab for temporary repairs or budget rental properties.

    Architectural Shingles

The industry standard. Multi-layered, dimensional, with a textured appearance. This is what most Ohio homes get in 2026. Available from all major manufacturers with Class 4 impact-resistant options.

    Lifespan
    25-30 years
    Cost (installed)
    $3.50-$7/sq ft installed
    Wind resistance
    110-130 mph
    Hail rating
    Class 3-4 available
    Ohio grade
    A

Best value for Ohio. Thicker layers resist freeze-thaw better, Class 4 options handle hail, and 130 mph wind ratings cover most Ohio storms. This is what we install on 90%+ of our jobs.

    Luxury / Designer Shingles

Premium shingles that mimic the look of natural slate, cedar shake, or tile. Thickest asphalt option with the best impact and wind ratings. Significantly heavier than standard shingles.

    Lifespan
    30-50 years
    Cost (installed)
    $5-$10+/sq ft installed
    Wind resistance
    130+ mph
    Hail rating
    Class 4 (superior)
    Ohio grade
    A+

Overkill for most homes, but excellent for high-end properties where aesthetics and longevity justify the premium. Handles everything Ohio throws at it.

    Metal Roofing

Standing seam or metal panels that last a lifetime. Sheds snow and ice naturally, won't crack or lose granules, and reflects heat. Increasingly popular in Ohio despite the higher upfront cost.

    Lifespan
    40-70+ years
    Cost (installed)
    $8-$16/sq ft installed
    Wind resistance
    120-140+ mph
    Hail rating
    Excellent (no granule loss)
    Ohio grade
    A+

Best long-term performance in Ohio. Smooth surface eliminates ice dam risk, thermal expansion tolerance handles freeze-thaw, and hail causes dents but never compromises waterproofing.

Insurance Tip: Class 4 Shingles Can Lower Your Premium

Many Ohio insurance carriers offer 5-28% premium discounts for homes with Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. On a $2,000/year policy, that's $100-$560 in annual savings, and the shingles also reduce future hail claims.

Ask your agent about impact-resistant shingle discounts before choosing your material. We can help you select a Class 4 option that qualifies for the maximum discount with your specific carrier.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are single-layer, flat, and uniform. The cheapest option. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are multi-layered, thicker, and have a textured appearance that mimics wood shake or slate. Architectural shingles last 10+ years longer, resist wind better (130 mph vs. 60-110 mph), and are now the industry standard for new installs.

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost?

Yes. For most Ohio homeowners, architectural shingles are the best value. They cost about $1-2 more per square foot installed but last 10+ years longer, carry better warranties, and handle Ohio weather significantly better. The price difference on a typical home is $1,500-$3,000 for an extra decade of protection.

Is a metal roof better than shingles for Ohio?

Metal roofing outperforms shingles in every category except upfront cost. It lasts 40-70+ years, sheds snow and ice naturally, won't crack in freeze-thaw cycles, and handles hail without granule loss. The tradeoff is cost: metal runs $8-$16/sq ft installed vs. $3.50-$7 for architectural shingles. Roughly 2-3x the price for 2-3x the lifespan.

    What is a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle?

Class 4 is the highest rating on the UL 2218 impact test. Shingles are hit with a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, and must show no cracking or fracturing. In hail-prone areas like Ohio, Class 4 shingles can reduce insurance premiums by 5-28% depending on your carrier. Owens Corning Duration FLEX and GAF Timberline AS II are popular Class 4 options.

Which brand is best. GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed?

All three are excellent manufacturers with comparable quality. In Ohio, Owens Corning has a hometown advantage (headquartered in Toledo) and strong dealer support. GAF Timberline is America's best-selling shingle with proven performance. CertainTeed excels in luxury and designer lines. The installation quality matters more than the brand. A great shingle installed poorly will fail before a good shingle installed correctly.

Can I put new shingles over old ones?

Technically yes (up to 2 layers per Ohio building code), but we don't recommend it. Layering hides rotted decking, adds weight to the structure, voids many manufacturer warranties, and prevents proper ice & water shield installation. A full teardown with decking inspection is always the better long-term investment.

Who in the world does that? Cornerstone does.

Showed up at 6:15 am, done by 2:15 PM. Same day. Not one nail left behind. As I walked around I noticed they had even painted the vent stacks to match. A++ in my book!

After that the rest of his team stepped it up and made the scheduling and completion of work happen so smoothly — they had the job completed with a bow on top by the time I even thought to call for an update! There's no doubt about it, I'll be calling Cornerstone Roofing and Siding for any future needs."
