What Happens When Ventilation Fails

Power Vents (Attic Fans)
Situational. Use with cautionPower vents use an electric or solar-powered fan to actively pull air out of the attic. They move a lot of air and can be effective in problem attics where passive ventilation alone isn't enough. However, they can create negative pressure in the attic, which can actually pull conditioned air from your living space upward through ceiling penetrations. Increasing your energy bill rather than decreasing it. We recommend power vents only in specific situations where passive ventilation has proven inadequate.
Soffit Vents (Intake)
Essential, no exhaust works without intakeSoffit vents are the intake side of the equation. They're installed in the underside of your roof overhang and bring fresh air into the lowest part of the attic. Continuous soffit vents provide the best intake airflow, but individual soffit vents work when continuous installation isn't possible. The most common ventilation mistake we see: homeowners or contractors add exhaust ventilation without enough intake. An exhaust vent without soffit intake is like trying to breathe out without breathing in. It doesn't work.
Signs Your Ventilation Is Inadequate
You don't need to climb on your roof to spot ventilation problems. Look for these warning signs:
Ice dams form along your eaves every winter
Even small ice ridges indicate heat is escaping into your attic and melting snow unevenly. This is the most reliable visual indicator of ventilation problems in Ohio.
Your attic feels like a sauna in summer
